Stansfield Fights For Gypsy Justice
The All Around The World singer is making a documentary about her time with the Romany gypsies, who are persecuted in areas of mainland Europe - and, in a letter written to the Tribune newspaper, she insists the problems are just as bad in her native Britain.
She writes, "While they try not to hurt anyone, they are constantly persecuted.
"Since arriving from India... these people have continued to fight for the simple and basic right to be themselves... There is a misunderstanding and great disrespect for these people, who come from a far older tradition and enjoy a greater depth of culture than many of us."
She goes on to document the Romany's hidden history during World War Two, when many gypsies were herded into concentration camps and used for sick Nazi experiments.
Leading Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who has been fighting for gypsy justice across Europe for years, has saluted Stansfield for her efforts to raise awareness about the travellers' plight.
He tells WENN, "I applaud Lisa Stansfield for her courage and support of the Roma community of Europe, who number around 15 million and whose traces go back to the ninth century.
"There is an apparent witch-hunt against the Roma community and Europe's slide towards racism and xenophobia... is unacceptable and must be stopped."
