Springer Opera Battle Fails

A Christian group has had its appeal to prosecute the boss of the BBC over the 2005 screening of the "blasphemous" musical JERRY SPRINGER - THE OPERA thrown out of court. Stephen Green, the director of Christian Voice, had hoped to overturn a previous January (07) ruling which forbade him from prosecuting the BBC's director general, Mark Thompson. Green claimed the show - a satire based on U.S. TV host Jerry Springer's controversial talk show - "clearly crossed the blasphemy threshold". But judges at London's High Court ruled on Wednesday (05Dec07) that Jerry Springer - The Opera could not be considered as blasphemous when considered "in context". They decided the production "as a whole was not and could not reasonably be regarded as aimed at, or an attack on, Christianity or what Christians held sacred". The BBC received a record 63,000 complaints when the musical was broadcast on U.K. TV screens in January 2005. The British TV corporation also received many messages of support for screening the musical, which includes scenes set in Hell with Jesus and Satan.
