Spongebob Clobbers Hulu
The website TVbytheNumbers, which tracks audience data for broadcast and cable, has been suggesting this week that the number of viewers for some individual TV shows posted online comes close to or is greater than the number for all of the shows combined offered by Hulu, the website owned by Disney/ABC, NBC/Universal, and Fox/News Corp. On Monday, it noted that reruns of The Andy Griffith Show on the TVLand website, generated nearly as many accesses in July as all of Hulu's programs that month. On Wednesday it reported that during the single week of July 19-25, Nickelodeon.com's SpongeBob Squarepants accounted for more viewing minutes than Hulu's for the entire month.

| The popularity of this story seems to suggest that video streaming is expected to be posting huge numbers already. Yes, $NFLX and $AAPL are making huge gains in the streaming space, but we must remember that the industry is still very young. For a while you will see 100%, 200% or higher "growth" in streaming because the starting numbers are so small, but that does not mean it will immediately even the gap with TV, which has a head start more than six decades long. The point is to recognize the trend and acknowledge it. If you're sitting here thinking Spongebob proves that video streaming is overblown, then you have missed the point. If you're looking to capitalize on the trend, then maybe jump on the $AAPL or $NFLX bandwagon, or even better, $AKAM, which seems to benefit from the success of many such companies.
