Spidey Sets Broadway Box Office Record

It looks as if Spider-Man is going to be as big a hit on Broadway as he was in movie theaters. Today's (Wednesday) New York newspapers reported that Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark took in $2,941,794 over nine performances at Foxwood's Theater in Times Square last week, the most ever earned by a Broadway production in a single week. Receipts were inflated somewhat by the new policy of "dynamic ticket pricing" charged by the theater -- and other Broadway theaters -- during holiday periods. In fact, today's New York Times observed that several shows scored their best weeks ever last week, including The Phantom of the Opera , which has been running for nearly 24 years but earned $1,579,428 over eight performances. With Daniel Radcliffe winding up his onstage stint in How to Succeed in Business , the Al Herschfeld Theater broke its ticket sales record by earning $1.9 million, thereby assuring investors that they'll at least break even.
