Former Spectrum bassist Bill Putt has died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 66.
The Australian rocker collapsed at his home in Strathewen, Victoria last Wednesday (07Aug13), and locals rushed to obtain a defibrillator machine from a local cricket club in a bid to restart his heart, but they were unable to save the star.
Putt's bandmate Mike Rudd paid tribute to his friend in a post on his website, writing, "Bill has been a rock to me ever since I've known him and his love and generosity of spirit touched everybody he met. His unassuming and gentle nature will be sorely missed, especially by children whom he adored. I am beyond devastated. Bill was an exemplar of the understated bass man.''
The musician played in the band between 1969 and 1973.
His death has sparked debate in Australia after it emerged the ambulance which was dispatched to his home took more than half an hour to arrive.
Rachel White, spokeswoman for the Australian government's Health Minister David Davis, says of the tragedy, "We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and Ambulance Victoria is available to meet with them anytime."
