Spanish royal Princess Cristina is to stand trial on tax fraud charges.

Cristina de Borbon, who is the daughter of Spain's King Juan Carlos, has been dragged into a case involving her husband, former Olympian Inaki Urdangarin, who faces allegations he embezzled public funds.

The sixth in line to the throne has now been ordered to stand trial, making her the first Spanish royal to face public prosecution.

The 49 year old faces two counts of tax fraud and she has denied the charges, while Urdangarin has denied charges including embezzling public funds and money-laundering.

King Juan Carlos abdicated over the summer (14) amid the scandal involving his daughter, and Princess Cristina's brother King Felipe Vi ascended to the throne in his place.
