Spain's Princess Cristina Has Been Stripped Of Her Title As Duchess Of Palma De Mallorca As She Prepares To Stand Trial For Tax Fraud.
The 49 year old's brother, King Felipe VI, announced the move on Friday (12Jun15) in a bid to distance the royal family from the ongoing scandal.
Princess Cristina was gifted the title in 1997, when she married former Olympian Inaki Urdangarin. He automatically loses his status as a duke as a result of the King's decision.
Cristina de Borbon, daughter of King Juan Carlos, has been indicted on two counts of tax fraud relating to a four-year probe into her husband's affairs. Urdangarin is charged with embezzling public funds and money-laundering.
They have both denied the allegations and the case is due to go to trial later this year (15).
If convicted, the sixth in line to the throne faces up to four years in prison, while Urdangarin could be jailed for up to 19 years.
She is the first member of Spain's royal family to face public prosecution since the monarchy was restored in 1975.
Her father, King Juan Carlos abdicated last summer (14) and handed over the throne to his son, Felipe VI.
The actor says he isn't "holding out for more money or doing anything like that".
The drama will be making its return to the streaming service in the near future.
