South Bank Show Award For Mercury Winners Elbow

20 January 2009
Mercury Music Prize winners Elbow and theatre impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh have been honoured at the annual South Bank Show awards.

The Mancunian band claimed the pop award while Sir Cameron - whose new production of Oliver! recently began on the London stage - was presented with an outstanding achievement accolade.

After accepting the prize, he apologised for "interfering" with "re-writes for the last 40 years".

"An award like this belongs to everyone I have ever worked with," he added.

Hunger, the debut film by British artist Steve McQueen, was named film of the year while Channel 4's Civil War saga The Devil's Whore took the best TV drama prize, though its leading actress Andrea Riseborough lost out in the best breakthrough category to dancer Aaron Sillis.

BBC3 sitcom Pulling took the best comedy award ahead of Gavin & Stacey and standup comedian Michael McIntyre while the Donmar Warehouse took the theatre award for its revival of Othello, starring Ewan McGregor and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

"Othello closed nearly a year ago and to get to this point 12 months on, to still feel it is being recognized and that people are remembering it, is very exciting," said director Michael Grandage.

"It means that elements of it clearly lingered on in the memory. The play was full of some of the finest acting I have ever had the privilege to direct and to get an award for it this late in the day feels rather lovely," he told the Stage.

Other winners included the English National Opera and Young Vic, artists Mohammed Ali and Peter Doig and dancer Wayne McGregor.

The South Bank Show awards will be broadcast on January 28th on ITV1.
