Slumdog Millionaire Strikes Lucky At Academy Awards

by | 23 February 2009

Slumdog Millionaire has dominated the 81st annual Oscars, with eight awards including best picture.

Danny Boyle's Mumbai-set drama, which tells of a boy from the slums appearing on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, was the major winner at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, adding to its Bafta and Golden Globe success.

Boyle was named best director while the film also won the best original screenplay, best cinematography, best sound mixing, best film editing, and the best original score and song prizes.

The film's child stars, who were flown from Mumbai for the ceremony, joined Boyle, producer Christian Coulson and the leading cast members as they accepted the best picture Oscar.

Kate Winslet and Sean Penn had earlier won the acting prizes.

Trainspotting helmer followed his Bafta and Golden Globe awards with his first Oscar at the Californian ceremony.

Boyle had earlier paid tribute to the show organisers before thanking his three children, wife, sisters and father.

"To Mumbai… all of you that helped us make the film and all of you didn't - thank you so much. You dwarf even this guy," he added, in reference to his best director Oscar.
