Sir Paul Mccartney To Unveil Motown Piano He Helped Refurbish

A fabled Motown piano Sir Paul McCartney paid to have restored is to be unveiled in New York in September (12) - and he'll be on hand to play it.

The Beatles star was shocked when he saw the battered 1877 Steinway grand piano, which had been played by Motown recording artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, during a tour of the new Motown Museum last year (11).

MCCartney made arrangements to have the instrument shipped to Steinway & Sons in New York for a makeover and refurbishment.

Experts replaced strings, hammers, legs and other parts and now the revamp is complete, MCCartney and Motown founder Berry Gordy are keen to see the remodel.

Robin Terry, the granddaughter of late museum founder Esther Gordy Edwards, tells Billboard.com, "One of the things Paul said is he wanted to see this project through from beginning to end. We thought this was an appropriate way of doing it, unveiling the piano and inviting both Paul and Mr. Gordy to be the first to sort of put their Dna on it, if you will."

After its unveiling at the Steinway & Sons showroom, the instrument will be returned to its spot in the Detroit, Michigan museum.
