Sinatra Musical At Centre Of Labour Union Lawsuit

A Broadway musical based on the music of FRANK SINATRA is at the centre of a labour union lawsuit - one of the show’s lead producers has been accused of unfair labour practices.

Come Fly Away is set to debut at the Marquis Theater in March (10), after a three-month run at Atlanta, Georgia's Alliance Theater.

The show follows four couples over the course of one evening in a nightclub, and is choreographed to Sinatra's hits by Broadway veteran Twyla Tharp.

The American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), which represents ballet dancers, has filed unfair labour practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against Troika Entertainment LLC, which is producing the show with James L. Nederlander.

National director Alan Gordon claims Troika failed to negotiate a contract with AGMA and turned to the Actor's Equity union to negotiate a contract, which treats the dancers as "second-class".

He explains, "The Equity contract is geared toward actors, not dancers."

However, Equity has hit back at the claims. Executive director Carol Waaser says, "James L. Nederlander, the lead producing partner for the Broadway production of Come Fly Away, is a member of the Broadway League and as such has every right to expect that the terms of the Broadway Production contract to which he is a signatory shall apply to this production."

A spokesman for the show has declined to comment.
