Simpsons' Home To Be Revealed

by | 10 July 2007

The Simpsons will finally learn where there true home lies today, with 14 US towns called Springfield battling it out to be recognised as the base of America's much-loved cartoon family.

Residents in the towns were asked to submit videos outlining their similarities to the fictional town of Springfield - where Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie live in the satirical series.

The winner of the contest will be announced today, with the Springfield that triumphs given the prize of hosting the forthcoming premiere of the Simpsons movie.

One of the favourites tipped to win the online poll, run by newspaper USA Today, is Springfield, Massachusetts.

Already known as the birthplace of basketball the town has reportedly pulled out all the stops to be recognised as the Simpsons' home.

US senator Edward Kennedy, believed to be the inspiration for the show's womanising mayor Joe Quimby, agreed to take part in the town's video entry and a local salon even reportedly offered to dye residents' hair blue in a tribute to Marge Simpson.

However a host of other Springfields also claim that the yellow-faced cartoon family would feel most at home in their town.

"We always really did think we were the one," Tim Farley, executive director at the convention and visitors bureau in Springfield, Illinois, told the Reuters news agency.

"The similarities between the cartoon and Springfield are really uncanny," he added.

The Simpsons movie is due to premiere in the US on July 26th.
