Sigourney Weaver Stars In 'Political Animals': Her Best Role Ever?
What's more, Sigourney told the Los Angeles Times that her involvement in Usa Network's TV series is "possibly the best role I have ever played." The series, described as a "prime-time take on dirty sexy politics." It quickly leaves the murky waters of modern American politics and takes on a life of its own, with Ellen Burstyn playing an ex-Vegas showgirl mom, there are tales of substance abuse, eating disorders, political ambition and the first publicly gay child in the White House. The co-president of Usa Network, Jeff Wachtel, said "We were looking for something that would take us out of the mold and would be a summer event that is timely and provocative." And provocative it is, with the inclusion of Vanessa Redgrave as a lesbian Supreme Court Justice; they're certainly pushing the boundaries of political stereotypes.
Will it really be Sigourney Weaver's finest role though? A number of Hollywood stars (think Kiefer Sutherland in 24, or Zooey Deschanel in 'New Girl') have found greater success on the small screen than they did in cinemas. Sigourney Weaver though, already has a plethora of iconic roles under her belt that would be hard to trump. Think Ripley in Alien. Think Grace, in one of cinema's biggest selling films, Avatar. Think Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. That's a lot to live up to, right there.
