Kyra Sedgwick - Shock Horror! The Possession Defies Critics, Tops U.s. Box Office
The Possession has topped the US box office charts after opening this weekend and frankly, we're not entirely sure why. Perhaps it's the allure of Kyra Sedgwick. Perhaps people were fooled by the Jewish-slant on the traditionally-Catholic-based genre. Whatever it was, The Possession - which also stars Natasha Calis and Jeffrey Dean Morgan - has defied the critical pasting that it received (it has only scored a paltry 35 per cent on the Rotten Tomatoes site) and raked in around 17.7 million dollars on what was, admittedly, a slow weekend at the box office.
According to the box office tracker Hollywood.com, overall takings were down four per cent on last year - continuing the downward trend being set this summer. Shia Laboeuf's new drama Lawless came in at second place on the chart, having taken $9.7 million. The action hero movie The Expendables 2 slipped to third place. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzengger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme: a veritable smorgasbord of big-screen beefcakes. The muscle-men have already spent two weeks at the top, we reckon they won't have been happy to make way for a poorly-received horror re-hash.
Summer 2012 has not been a good one for movies. Overall income has been boosted by the success of big blockbuster movies such as Avengers and Dark Knight Rises but has also been let down by flops such as Battleships and Rock of Ages. Industry insiders are blaming everything from the Olympics to the Denver shootings for disappointing movie theatre attendance and all eyes are on the new James Bond movie Skyfall to buck the trend.
