Guillermo Del Toro - Second Trailer for Pacific Rim Raises Story Expectations [Video]
It's not all about the aliens and giant robots, but there's plenty of that, to be sure.
With nine days left until Pacific Rim hits theatres, Guillermo del Toro and co. have graced us with the final trailer. It’s big, it’s bad, it features something that sounds vaguely like dubstep, that much you’d expect. So what’s different this time. Well, cast your eyes back to the first theatrical trailer for the film. If you’re anything like most of us on the internet, it featured two of the things that get your heart racing – giant monsters and giant robots. Don’t ask why, it simply happens and it’s a fact for any 10-year-old kid as much as any adult with a soft spot for sci-fi/video games/high-budget action flicks/any of the above. Here, see for yourself.
This new one, however, appears to be less about the giant robots (sigh) and more about humanity, human bonds, the human condition, you get the idea. Don’t worry, there’s still enough footage of the giant robots (though conspicuously fewer monsters) in this one to peak anyone’s interest. However, we also get a glimpse of the characters.
Can Guillermo del Toro pull it off?
Also, there’s more of the film’s mythology on display, which makes it sound pretty interesting, beyond the superficial fascination of technology and what looks like really good CGI and a solid cast. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Idris Elba (Queer as Folk) are both relative newcomers to the big screen, but they do have experience in the action genre, so expectations are high. Luckily, we won’t have to wait for long – Pacific Rim hits theatres on July 12th.
