Scott Fights Back In Label Lawsuit

JILL SCOTT's representative has hit back at the R&B star's record label after executives accused her of breach of contract.
Hidden Beach Recording bosses have named the Gettin' In The Way singer/actress in legal papers filed last week (begs01Feb10), alleging Scott dismissed the music executives after using them to find fame.
The lawsuit claims the label "poured its heart and soul into making poet and soul and R&B singer and songwriter Jill Scott a superstar", resulting in the singer "becoming one of the most well-known, highly respected recording artists of our time".
Hidden Beach bosses, who are seeking undisclosed damages, insist Scott owes them three more albums.
But a spokesperson for Scott, who left the company after more than a decade in October (09), has blasted the allegations, insisting the case has "no legal merit", citing a local Californian law in her defence.
In a statement, Scott's rep says, "The lawsuit filed on February 3, 2010 by Hidden Beach Recordings against Jill Scott has no legal merit and misrepresents the history of Ms. Scott's relationship with the label.
"Jill Scott has the legal right to terminate her recording contract with Hidden Beach Recordings under California's 7-year rule, where she had been a recording artist for more than 10 years. During her time at Hidden Beach Recordings, she released several highly successful albums.
"At this time, with many creative projects in the works which include music, film and television roles and product development, Ms. Scott looks forward to continuing to further her artistry and building the Jill Scott brand in other creative environments."
