Scorsese To Remake Taxi Driver ? With De Niro?
What appeared to be a far-fetched rumor circulating around the Berlin Film Festival that Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Lars Von Trier would team up to remake the 1976 classic Taxi Driver suddenly were lifted into the realm of credibility by Daily Variety, which reported today (Tuesday) that the rumors "at least for the time being ... appear to be true." The trade publication indicated that the project was suggested by a 2003 film that Von Trier made with Danish director Jorgen Leth in which Von Trier challenged Leth to remake his 1967 film The Perfect Human. The rumor took on a life of its own after Peter Aalbæk, Von Trier's producing partner, told the Copenhagen film magazine Ekko recently that he could "neither confirm nor deny" it but added that an official announcement about it would be made soon. At a news conference at the festival over the weekend, Scorsese acknowledged only that he is in talks with De Niro about another crime drama, which would be their first since 1995. "There's no doubt about that. We're working on something like that," he said. "But it's from the vantage point of older men looking back." Britain's Guardian newspaper dug up an old New York Post interview with Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader, in which he said that he had been talking with Scorsese about doing a sequel to Taxi Driver in which the De Niro character "is older." Scorsese is attending the Berlin festival to promote his latest film, Shutter Island , which opens in the U.S. on Friday.
