Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock is apparently the frontrunner to take on the role of Miss Hannigan in the upcoming remake of the musical Annie, with E! News confirming that the actress is set to star in the Jay-Z and Will Smith helmed project. Bullock will join the likes of Anne Hathaway, Reese Witherspoon and Renée Zellweger as the latest unlikely actress to try and prove her worth as a singer as well as an actress, as the movie's producers look to continue adding big-name acting talent to the film's bill rather than known singers.

Should Bullock be given the role, she will star alongside Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis in the film that is being distributed by Sony Pictures. Bullocks' character is the cruel and undermining head of the orphanage where Wallis' Annie and her friends live - with the fictional orphanage expected to be set in a poverty-stricken part of urban America. As unlikely as it may seem to pick Bullock, considering how well the likes of Hathaway and Zellweger and so forth have performed when the time called for it, her casting could prove to be a worthwhile one.

For those unfamiliar with the classic musical story, the 1977 movie was based on the popular Broadway show of the same name, which was developed from the the popular Harold Gray comic strip; Little Orphan Annie. It follows the titular star as she tries to get by each day in her under-privileged surroundings, although all she really wants to do is find and be reunited with her real parents. The musical spawned the hits 'Tomorrow' and 'Hard Knock Life,' as well as a wealth of other well-known songs.

The movie has been slated for a 2014 release date, with Sony previously indicating that the film should be out by Christmas 2014. With Bullock's casting the film should begin filming by the end of the year, should the film continue to remain on course for it's scheduled filming time.
