After a string of successful film appearances in the likes of Avatar, Clash of the Titans and Terminator Salvation, Sam Worthington may have begun to think that his movie career was fool-proof. The reviews for his latest on-screen venture, though, may prove otherwise. Man on A Ledge, also starring Elizabeth Banks is released today in the United States (and February 3 in the UK) but so far, the reviews for the film will be giving Worthington cause for concern.
Roger Ebert, the respected Chicago Sun-Times critic condemned the movie, saying that it "cuts back and forth between two preposterous plot lines and uses the man on the ledge as a device to pump up the tension." Stephen Holden is similarly scathing, summarizing the film as "a movie that doesn't realize it should have been a comedy" and Liam Lacey for Globe and Mail says that "credibility takes a nose-dive long before its protagonist is separated from his perch." And whilst a minority of film critics praise the film for some of the actors' performances, it has received an overall score of just 23% on the Rotten Tomatoes site.
With Sam Worthington being the only big-name star in the film, its producers will, most definitely have been relying on better reviews to balance the books when the box office receipts come in. As it currently stands, without word-of-mouth recommendations, Man On A Ledge looks likely to be a flop.
