Sam Raimi Planning To Revive Jack Ryan Movie Franchise

by | 19 March 2008

Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is reportedly in negotiations to revive the Jack Ryan film franchise with Paramount studios.

The Tom Clancy character was first played by Alec Baldwin in 1990's The Hunt for Red October, before Harrison Ford took on the role for Patriot Games in 1992 and Clear and Present Danger two years later.

And though Ryan has not appeared on the silver screen since Ben Affleck took on the part in 2002's The Sum of All Fears, industry newspaper Variety reports that Raimi is in discussions with Paramount to develop a new series of Jack Ryan movies.

The Evil Dead creator will reportedly produce several films with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Josh Donen, focusing on CIA analyst Ryan as a younger character.

But while the films could revisit Ryan as a younger man, it is rumoured that the success of the reinvention of James Bond in Casino Royale could see the new Jack Ryan movie set in the present, with a global threat to be tackled.

Raimi is currently developing horror movie Drag Me to Hell - from which Oscar-nominee Ellen Page had to withdraw due to a scheduling conflict - but is likely to begin work on the new Jack Ryan film as soon as he completes production on the Universal Studios project.

Though Clancy is working on a new Jack Ryan novel, it is reported that Paramount representatives have not read the plot outline and as such have not decided whether the book will form the basis of the new film, which is scheduled for a 2010 release.
