'Safe House' Breaks 'The Vow' To Top U.s. Box Office

'Safe House' was involved in one of the tightest weekend Box Office scraps in recent months this weekend as it competed with 'The Vow' to top the takings in the US. The New York Post reports that the former had a slim lead over 'The Vow,' taking in some $24 million with its competition just behind on $23.6 million - both figures providing good news for the film industry which is showing an uncharacteristically successful winter period, coming off the back of an equally surprising slow holiday season.

'Safe House' stars Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington and focuses on the story of a young CIA Agent looking after a fugitive in a safe house, only to find himself on the run with his charge after an attack. The film hasn't been a huge critical success, scoring an average of 51% on review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes, but that evidently hasn't mattered with Washington in particular once again proving a big box office draw.

In comparison 'The Vow' is much more of a love story, starring MCAdams">Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. It sees Mcadams' character suffer from memory loss after a car crash, resulting in her husband - played by Tatum - trying to win her heart all over again. Tomatoes scores it at 30%, however once again the box office draw of its two leading lights has ensured that it's right up there at the top of the pile. The official figures will be known tomorrow.
