Ryder Joins Star Trek

Winona Ryder has been confirmed as the latest addition to the ever-improving cast of Lost creator JJ Abrams' new Star Trek movie, reports claim.

According to Variety, the actress is to take up the role of the young human mother of Spock, (played by Heroes' star Zachary Quinto), in the eleventh Star Trek film, which tells the tale of the Starfleet Academy days of Captain Kirk and the Starship Enterprise crew.

The Girl, Interrupted star's confirmation as Spock's mother Amanda Grayson sees her joining an already stellar lineup for the Christmas 2008 movie.

Simon Pegg is to play the young Scotty, while Lord of the Rings actor Karl Urban stars as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy.

Harold and Kumar star John Cho will play Mr Sulu and relative newcomer Chris Pine is to step into William Shatner's shoes as Captain James T Kirk.

Ryder recently completed production on The Informers, Gregor Jordan's adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, and is in pre-production on Rebecca Miller's Private Lives of Pippa Lee.

The studio producing the film is holding an open audition for people with "unique" features to appear in the upcoming film.

The release from Headquarters Casting said they were "especially seeking talent with interesting and unique facial features, such as long necks, small heads, extremely large heads, wide-set eyes, bug eyes, close-set eyes, large forehead, short upper lip, pronounced cheekbones, over or undersized ears and/or nose".

It added that people with "facial deformities, ultra plain-looking people, ultra perfect-looking people, pure wholesome looks, twins, triplets, emaciated talent, in addition to regally poised and postured talent", would also be considered.

"This is an epic project and we are looking for the most intriguing and interesting faces to integrate in this film," the invitation added.
