Ryan Reynolds is struggling to maintain his status as a box-office banker.
It was a weekend that Ryan Reynolds would probably rather forget. In fact, it he probably woke-up in cold sweats wondering whether he had another Green Lantern on his hands. The actor starred in two new releases this week, crime-comedy RIPD and the animated flick Turbo - both cost $130 million to make, both were expected to trouble the top of the box-office, both bombed.
Despite A Pretty Cool Premise, RIPD Failed To Fire At The Box Office
We say bombed: maybe that's a little unfair, though RIPD - also starring Jeff Bridges - took a paltry $12.8 million to sneak No.7 on the box-office, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Reynolds and co were probably rubbing their hands together after the success of Despicable Me 2, but his animated effort Turbo was trumped by the box-office stalwart and took $21.5 million to manage third place.
It was the Minions that took second place with a further $25 million despite the family sequel having been on general release for three weeks.
Old-school horror The Conjuring, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, was given little chance of beating the rival new releases though it stormed to No.1 with a healthy $41.5 million in ticket sales to almost double its budget in the first week. A sequel is expected to be announced shortly.
Ryan Reynolds Starred In Two of the Big Releases at the Box Office This Weekend
Elsewhere at the box-office, Adam Sandler's awfully reviewed Grown Ups 2 took fourth spot, while Red 2, The Heat, World War Z and Monster's University also featured in the top ten. Guillermo Del Toro's huge budget action-sci-fi movie Pacific Rim could only manage sixth place and looks certain to make a loss for Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures.
