Russell Vows To Keep Up Cello Practice
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 star KERI RUSSELL is determined not to let her cello lessons go to waste after taking a crash 12-week course to master the fingering of the instrument for her new film. The actress plays a seasoned concert cellist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in new movie August Rush, and, so that she looked like she knew what she was doing, she took lessons. She tells WENN, "The joke is you're never just OK at the cello; you have to be a child prodigy at the cello, so I went from Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to Bach solos in about 12 weeks. "I spent many many hours a day just to fake the correct fingering. I was doing compromised versions of the Cs and Gs. The cello is a beautiful instrument and it's the closest to the sound of the human voice, so that's why it's used for the really emotional parts of the symphonies. I felt I couldn't mess up. "Everything surrounding the cello is romantic. I have not picked it up since. (Director) Kirsten (Sheridan) thinks I must have thrown my cello away by now, but I will play it again some day. It takes a lot of work but they're exquisite instruments.
