Russell Crowe Critiques Robin Hood

Russell Crowe believes the latest 'Robin Hood' is superior to previous instalments.

The Australian actor - who plays the titular character in the action movie - says the Ridley Scott-directed story is better than other versions as it avoids cliches.

He said: "Past filmmakers and studios have 'supposed' things about Robin Hood. This film depicts the origins; where he might actually have come from instead or relying on the usual cliches."

The 46-year-old star was then asked to look at some of the old versions - and claimed the 1991 movie 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' starring Kevin Costner was not up to much.

He told French TV show 'Le Grand Journal: "It looks like a Jon Bon Jovi video."

He was also unkind about the 1938 Errol Flynn classic 'The Adventures of Robin Hood', joking about the practicality of tights in a forest.

He said: "The practicality of going through an English forest, with all its coarse bushes and bramble and all that? Not very practical now, is it?"

'Robin Hood', which also stars fellow Australian Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12.
