Russell Brand's Alcohol Smells
Teetotal Russell Brand insisted on sniffing alcohol before shooting scenes for new movie 'Arthur' in order to get into character as the drunken millionaire playboy.
Russell Brand sniffed alcohol on the set of 'Arthur' to remind him of being drunk.
The British actor - who has battled alcoholism and drug addiction - plays drunken millionaire playboy Arthur Bach in the remake of the popular 1981 film and wanted to make his scenes as realistic as possible.
Director Jason Winer explained: "He sniffs alcohol to give himself a sense memory of what those days were like. Russell's been sober for years so we're not worried."
Jason admitted there are other similarities between 35-year-old Russell - who was forced to quit his UK radio show last year following an outcry over obscene answering machine messages he left for veteran actor Andrew Sachs - and his on-screen character.
He told Empire magazine: "Hopefully we're capturing the really rebellious spirit that made the first one a success. But there is a different context. For a start you can't be this rich and badly-behaved without garnering some media attention, as Russell has discovered."
Russell has previously admitted he drew on his own experiences to play drug-addicted musician Aldous Snow in 'Get Him to the Greek'.
He said: "It's really good because it's more fun to play him on drugs because now it enables me to relive the better aspects of my own drunken hell without some of the terrible consequences.
"I think it was written with my personal problems in mind so yes, I was able to bring a lot of that to the script.
"I went through all of those years with a crack and heroin addiction I might as well get some money out of it. It cost enough. It was expensive. You get beaten up and go to crack houses. There's a down beat in a crack house."
