Rushdie Plans Book About Decade In Hiding
Rushdie sparked outrage after releasing his 1988 book The Satanic Verses, which the then-Supreme Leader of Iran, Grand Ayatollah Khomeini, insisted was an insult to Islam.
The religious leader issued a fatwa in 1989, ordering Muslims to kill the Midnight's Children writer.
Rushdie was subsequently forced to live under police protection until 1998 when Iranian government authorities ruled they would not "support nor hinder assassination operations on Rushdie".
Now 62-year-old Rushdie is set to put pen to paper to tell all about the harrowing period in a new book.
He says, "It's my story and at some point it needs to be told. That point is getting closer I think."
