Rupert Murdoch Takes Off The Gloves
Amid new allegations of potentially criminal wrongdoing by units of his News Corporation, Rupert Murdoch took to Twitter today (Thursday), vowing to fight back. "Seems every competitor and enemy piling on with lies and libels," he said in his first tweet, adding, "So bad, easy to hit back hard, which preparing." His comments came following a report on the BBC's Panorama program claiming that NDS, a former News Corp subsidiary, helped hackers distribute codes to an ITV digital service -- and a rival of the News Corp-controlled Sky satellite service -- that eventually caused it to collapse. A similar report about NDS shenanigans appeared today in the Australian Financial Review . In the U.S., PBS aired an overview of the numerous scandals that have struck News Corp in recent years. "Enemies many different agendas," Murdoch said in a separate tweet, "but worst old toffs and right wingers who still want last century's Status Quo with their monoplies [sic]." Murdoch, who had previously conceded that his News of the World had engaged in voicemail hacking, seemed prepared to defend his company against the latest round of allegations. His chief lieutenant, News Corp COO Chase Carey, issued a statement accusing the BBC of manipulating and mischaracterizing emails in "flagrant disregard to the BBC's broadcasting code." Murdoch led the cheering section. "Let's have it on!" he tweeted, then added cryptically. "Choice, freedom of thought and markets, individual personal responsibility."
