His son James was beginning to answer a specific question concerning phone-hacking, when a member of the audience stood up, walked to the front of the hearing and threw the foam at Rupert. The protestor was then approached by Murdoch's wife Wendi, who attempted to defend her husband, before throwing the empty paper plate back at him. After the hearing had been adjourned for a short while, Murdoch returned to answer questions without his jacket, which was covered in the white foam.

Reports on Twitter suggest the comedian and activist Jonnie Marbles was responsible for the attack, but these are currently unconfirmed. Shortly before the incident, Marbles had tweeted, "It is a far better thing that I do now than I have ever done before #splat".
