Rupert Murdoch - Rupert Murdoch Attacked By Pie Man At Parliamentary Inquiry
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch was attacked by a cream pie opportunist on Tuesday (19Jul11) as he addressed questions from a British Parliament committee inquiry into the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.
Two hours into the inquisition, a spectator jumped over a railing and lunged at Murdoch, attempting to slam a plate of shaving cream into his face.
Murdoch's wife, Wendi, who was sitting directly behind her husband, fought off the attacker, who called the mogul "a greedy billionaire". In the fracas, cream fell onto the tycoon's suit. The hearing was halted for 15 minutes so order could be restored.
Police led the pie thrower, identified as Jonnie Marbles, away in handcuffs.
Murdoch and his son James were called upon to answer questions about the phone-hacking scandal, which prompted them to close the New of the World earlier this month (Jul11).
The Murdochs run the News Corp empire, which oversees the running of newspapers like the News of the World, The Sun and The Wall Street Journal.
During the parliamentary hearing, Murdoch, 80, insisted he was not responsible for the phone-hacking controversy and offered, "This is the most humble day of my life."
Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old tabloid amid allegations a private investigator working for the publication had illegally accessed voicemail messages belonging to royals, celebrities, and the families of murder victims.
