Rufus Wainwright Felt Impending Doom Before 9/11

Singer Rufus Wainwright was burdened with an "ominous" sense of impending doom just hours before terrorists crashed planes into New York's World Trade Center in 2001.

The songwriter was attending a New York Fashion Week event on the evening of 10 September, and he recalls how a rainstorm provoked a feeling of imminent dread within him.

When he awoke the following morning to the news that the U.S. was under attack from terrorists, the event shocked him to the core and prompted him to check in to a rehab clinic months later in a bid to beat his spiralling drug demons.

Wainwright tells Mojo magazine, "I remember the night before 9/11 so well. It was New York Fashion Week and I went to this Marc Jacobs show. I was on a bunch of stuff, drugs. I just had this uncomfortable feeling within myself. It was pouring rain and everybody had to go outside to get their cocktails and their high heels stuck in the mud and there was an ominous air, I swear to God.

"The next day we all woke up, a beautiful morning, you turn on the television and... I'd had this blissful, treacherous, hard-edged party life, but the floor had fallen out of it. I started to crumble myself. I went into rehab in 2002."
