Ruby Sparks Reviews: It's Thumbs Up For Zoe Kazan

Ruby Sparks is the follow-up movie from 'Little Miss Sunshine' directors Jonathon Dayton and Valerie Faris. Released this coming weekend (July 27, 2012), the movie has gone down well with the critics and Zoe Kazan (who also wrote the script) has impressed in the lead role. She plays the title character, who is, in herself, a work of fiction - the ideal woman, created by writer Calvin (Paul Dano).
So far, the movie has done well with the critics, with Roger Ebert picking apart the film's complexities, especially its commentary on gender politics. "Zoe Kazan of course is an actress as well as a writer, and in her career, she must have often felt tugged this way and that by the fantasies and requirements of the (mostly) men who wrote and directed her roles." New York Times' Stephen Holden likens the movie to 'Little Miss Sunshine,' saying that it "has the same zany and sweet tone laced with just enough hardheaded wisdom to keep it grounded in psychological truth."
Salon.com may have dismissed it as "mediocre and half-baked" but the overall attitude to the film was perhaps summed up by Todd MCCarthy, writing for the Hollywood Reporter, who said that it's "a beguiling romantic fantasy about the creative process and its potential to quite literally take on a life of its own, Ruby Sparks performs an imaginative high-wire act with finesse and charm."
