Ross Must Pay Damages Over Dj Assault
Rapper RICK ROSS has been ordered to hand over $300,000 (£187,500) in damages to a DJ he is accused of attacking during an altercation in 2008.
The Hustlin' star appeared in New York Federal Court on Thursday (15Apr10) to give his account of the encounter, in which he and his entourage are alleged to have pounced on DJ Vlad when he quizzed the rapper about rumours he had previously served as a correctional officer.
Ross told the court he was unaware the assault was going to happen and insisted he never laid a hand on the DJ.
Vlad, real name Vlad Lyubovni, sued for $4 million (£2.5 million), claiming he suffered a broken eye socket, a broken nose, nerve damage to his face and required seven stitches under his right eye, in addition to other injuries, as a result of the attack.
The jury deliberated for just one hour before deciding in Vlad's favour and finding Ross responsible for $50,000 (£31,250) in compensation and $250,000 (£156,250) in punitive damages.
In a 'tweet' online, Vlad praised the jury's decision, writing, "Today is a good day."
Ross admits he is relieved to be paying less than the $4 million Vlad had sued for, but reveals he plans to fight the verdict.
He tells MTV.com, "The lawsuit is done. Even though I plan to appeal the decision, I thank the courts for the monetary decision that they made. They were extremely lenient, I appreciate that. It's back to the business for the boss.
"It's a couple of papers, but it was a two-year-long case. After court expenses, etc., the plaintiff may get $40 or 50K. I'm blessed to be in the situation I'm in. Four mil (sic) was at stake. It's behind me."
The heavyweight hip-hop star initially denied the claims he worked as a prison official, but he has since confirmed his youth employment.
