Rooney Mara has sparked rumours she is engaged.

The 27-year-old 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' actress - who has been dating Charlie McDowell since 2010 - was spotted wearing an unusual diamond ring on her engagement finger while enjoying a lunch date with her director beau in New York on Friday (01.02.13).

According to the MailOnline.com, this is the first time the Oscar nominated star has been photographed with the ring in public.

The actress has always been tight-lipped about her relationship with Charlie, who comes from a famous family.

His parents are Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen, his stepfather is Ted Danson, and his sister is 'Sons of Anarchy' actress Lily McDowell.

Despite her success on the big screen, Rooney has previously insisted she isn't comfortable in the spotlight.

She explained that she finds it ''annoying'' people want to know what she's wearing and would rather they concentrate on her acting skills rather than her fashion sense.

She also admitted she doesn't like walking the red carpet because she hates being the focus of everyone's attention.

She said: ''[The red carpet experience] is a nightmare. It's a panic attack waiting to happen. I don't even like people to sing 'Happy Birthday' to me ... And then I have to walk out onto the middle of this carpet and there are all these photographers, and they're all screaming at you.

''Usually there's a party at the other end of it, so it's not even like I have solace at the end of the carpet! It's like then I have to walk into my other nightmare.''
