Romero Agrees To Plead Guilty In Marriage Sham Case

Mexican actress FERNANDA ROMERO will plead guilty to lying on immigration documents to avoid a retrial over allegations of marriage fraud.

The 28 year old, who landed a small role in 2009 horror Drag Me To Hell, is accused of marrying American musician Kent Ross in 2005 so she could obtain permanent residency in the U.S.

During the original trial last year (10), the jury at Los Angeles Federal Court heard how Romero reportedly began an affair with celebrity photographer Markus Klinko in 2007, despite being married to Kent, and told the snapper she only wed for immigration purposes.

Prosecutors claimed Romero and Kent never lived together and alleged the musician was paid $5,000 (£3,330) to marry the actress.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to counts of marriage fraud and making false statements in September (10), but jury members failed to reach a unanimous verdict and it was declared a mistrial.

The case was due to be tried again this year (11), but now Romero has reportedly agreed to acknowledge she made a false statement on an immigration form in 2007, according to court records filed in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Ross has also agreed to plead guilty to falsely stating on papers that he and Romero were living together in both 2005 and 2006, reports the Associated Press.

Romero and Ross are due in court on 28 January (11) to formally enter their guilty pleas.
