Romeo + Juliet Tops Hmv's Poll Of Most Romantic Films

by | 13 February 2008

A modern take on a classic Shakespearean love story has topped a poll to find the most romantic film of all time.

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet topped the HMV survey, held to coincide with Valentine's Day tomorrow.

The Australian director's film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes fought off tough competition to take the top spot.

Casablanca, the 1942 classic film featuring performances from Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, came second in the survey.

In third spot was Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, followed by James Cameron's epic Titanic, DiCaprio's second entry in the list.

The film that made Patrick Swayze a household name, Dirty Dancing, was voted the fifth most romantic movie of all time.

Another Luhrmann film, Moulin Rouge!, was placed sixth.

When Harry Met Sally and the British film Brief Encounter were voted seventh and eighth respectively.

Julia Robert's Pretty Woman and Patrick Swayze's second entry Ghost made up the top ten films on the list.

British actor High Grant appears in four of the top 50 films voted for by HMV customers: Noting Hill, Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Sense and Sensibility.

The top ten most romantic films according to HMV are:

1 Romeo + Juliet
2 Casablanca
3 Sleepless in Seattle
4 Titanic
5 Dirty Dancing
6 Moulin Rouge!
7 When Harry Met Sally
8 Brief Encounter
9 Pretty Woman
10 Ghost
