Moviemaker Sergiu Nicolaescu has died, aged 82.
The Romanian filmmaker passed away in a Bucharest hospital.
His films have included Dacii (The Dacians), Mihai Viteazu and Carol I, in which he also starred as King Carol.
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta paid tribute to the director on Thursday (03Jan13), stating, "A star of Romania has been extinguished."
Nicolaescu also made his mark as a politician in his homeland and was elected to the Romanian Senate in 1992 for the Social Democratic Party. He retired from politics last month (Dec12).
His funeral will take place on Saturday (05Jan12).
