Roman Polanski's Wife Hails ''End Of A Nightmare''

Roman Polanski's wife cannot wait to get back to "normal family life".

Emmanuelle Seigner, 44, spoke out after her film director husband was told this week he wouldn't be extradited to the US from Switzerland to be sentenced on a statutory rape conviction dating back to over 30 years ago.

Emmanuelle said: "It's the end of a nightmare for my children and myself that lasted more than nine months. I'm really excited we can get back to our projects and resume normal family life."

Roman has been under house arrest for the past nine months in Switzerland, but the country's authorities announced on Monday (12.07.10) he would not be made to travel back to America.

The Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement: "The 76-year-old French-Polish film director Roman Polanski will not be extradited to the US. The freedom-restricting measures against him have been revoked."

In 1977, the 'Rosemary's Baby' director pleaded guilty to charges of having underage sex with 13-year-old Samantha Gailey, now known as Samantha Geimer.

He believed he would face a jail term of just 42 days, and claimed a judge had reneged on a plea bargain deal to reduce the charges from rape and serious sexual assault if he admitted under-age sex.

On the day of his sentencing in 1978 he fled to London then Paris because he was protected from extradition as a French citizen.

The 76-year-old film filmmaker was placed under house arrest in December, after being taken into custody in September while attending a film festival in Zurich.
