Roland Martin Suspended Over David Beckham Homophobia Remarks

The American journalist and pundit, Roland Martin has said that he will be meeting with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, following his suspension from Cnn over his Twitter messages, which many deemed to be homophobic. The messages in question were posted during Sunday's Super Bowl match (February 6, 2012), when Martin posted a message whilst David Beckham's H&M underwear advert was being aired, reading "if a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him! #superbowl."

This was then followed by another, which read "I bet soccer fan @piersmorgan will be in line at H&M in the morning to get his hands on David Bechman's underwear line! LOL #superbowl." The comments enraged many, though Martin defended himself by explaining that he was making light of soccer fans and not intending to make homophobic comments. On Wednesday, his employment at Cnn was "suspended indefinitely" according to Huffington Post.

Today (February 9, 2012), Martin has announced that he has responded to an invitation from GLAAD and said that he looks "forward to meeting with GLAAD in the near future and having a productive dialogue." Despite his highly prolific use of the social networking site (he has posted over 64,000 Tweets since joining), he has made no direct reference to his suspension. GLAAD responded to his message, via Twitter saying that they, too, are looking forward to the meeting.
