Rock Stars Mourn Amp Great Marshall

Stars including Slash, Huey Morgan and Joe Bonamassa have paid tribute to guitar amp pioneer Jim Marshall.

The Marshall Amplification founder, whose equipment was used by rock legends like Jimi Hendrix, Joe Perry and Kurt Cobain, has died at the age of 88.

A statement confirming the sad news was published on his company's website on Thursday (05Apr12), hailing Marshall as a "legendary man" who led a "truly remarkable life".

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash was the first rocker to mourn the loss in a post on his Twitter.com page.

He tweeted, "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R (rock 'n' roll) will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on Forever!"

The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess also honoured the so-called Father of Loud by referencing the famous Spinal Tap scene featuring a Marshall amp with 11 notches on the volume knob.

He wrote, "Jim Marshall has sadly died. The man behind Marshall Amps - whatever you're listening to, just turn it up to 11. Make it one louder for Jim."

Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp added, "Rip Jim Marshall... What an iconic sound... just think what we would of (sic) missed without you! JM has left the building!" while Fun Lovin' Criminals' Huey Morgan writes, "If you got a Marshall amp, go to it. Turn it on and play it as loud as you can for a man who pioneered rock amplification. Do it for Jim!"

Blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa writes, "A very sad day for the Marshall family. My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul and his family. Rest in Peace Jim Marshall Obe."
