Robin Gibb, 62, "A Great Singer Who Died Too Young"

Robin Gibb has been described by fellow musician Bryan Adams as "a great singer" who died "too young". The Bee Gees legend passed away on Sunday evening (May 20, 2012) following a lengthy battle with cancer, reports the Press Association.

Following news of the death, musical luminaries took to their Twitter accounts to pay tribute to a man who sold more over 200 million records worldwide while notching up dozens of hit singles. Canadian rocker Adams tweeted, "Very sad to hear about yet another great singer dying too young", while Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall simply wrote, "Rip Robin Gibb. A musical giant". Gibb has been ill for a number of months and battled pneumonia in addition to his colon cancer - photographs of the musician looking thin and frail began to worry fans late last year. He subsequently pulled out of numerous scheduled appearances, though always vowed to fight until the end. A prominent Labour supporter - Gibb has also received tributes from former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In a statement, the former said, "Robin was not only an exceptional and extraordinary musician and songwriter, he was a highly intelligent, interested and committed human being. He was a great friend with a wonderful open and fertile mind and a student of history and politics. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with Dwina and all the family".

Robin's twin brother Maurice died of a heart attack in 2003 following intestinal surgery, while his younger brother Andy passed away from heart failure in 1988. He will be remembered as one of the most influential British musicians of all time, and music journalist and broadcaster Paul Gambaccini dubbed him "one of the most important figures in the history of British music".
