Acclaimed writer Robert Hass has been honoured with a $100,000 (£58,824) lifetime achievement prize from officials at the Academy of American Poets.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Time and Materials author and former U.S. poet laureate was named the recipient of the Wallace Stevens Award for "outstanding and proven mastery" on Tuesday (26Aug14), following in the footsteps of previous honorees John Ashbery and Adrienne Rich.

Meanwhile, Life On Mars poet Tracy K. Smith was also celebrated with a $25,000 (£14,706) fellowship, according to the Associated Press.
