Robert Downey Jr - Robert Downey Jr. To Produce Uss Indianapolis Movie

Robert Downey Jr. is to produce a movie about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.

The 'Iron Man' actor and his wife Susan Downey want to bring a film about the tragic World War II incident in July 1945, which saw the US warship sunk by a Japanese torpedo, leaving the crew in shark-infested waters.

It is expected it will be told through the eyes of 11-year-old boy Hunter Scott, who embarked on a journey in 1996 to exonerate the court-martialed captain of the vessel after reading into the subject for a History Day competition.

Just 316 of the 1,196 crew survived the ordeal, which was famously chronicled in Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws'.

Hunter went before Congress in 2000 and 2001 to vindicate Captain Charles McVay, who committed suicide in 1968, and the US navy eventually amended his record.

Robert Schenkkan, who recently worked on mini-drama 'The Pacific', is set to script the project, which has yet to be titled.

It is not the first time someone has tried to bring the story to the cinema screen - 'Star Trek' director J.J. Abrams wrote a draft script back in 2005, but it never got made.
