Robert Downey Jr - Robert Downey Jr Defends Mel Gibson
Robert Downey Jr has come out in defence of controversial actor and director Mel Gibson at an awards ceremony on Friday night (14/10.)
Downey - who's had his own well-documented issues with drink and drugs - was at the American Cinemathque Awards in Beverly Hills when he elected to stand up for the man he co-starred with in 1990's 'Air America.'
"Unless you are without sin - and if you are, you are in the wrong f**king industry - you should forgive him and let him work . he taught me many things, and I will use the 'C' word - courage, there's nothing so much wrong with him," said Downey Jr, going on to refer to his own past issues, "Of course you have to worry about the guy making the judgment here. He's a good dude with a good heart."
Gibson's history includes battles with alcohol dependency, accusations of anti-Semitic comments and, in 2010, he was in court for a charge of spousal battery for alleged abuse towards ex Oksana Grigorieva. According to Us Magazine though, Downey Jr had nothing but praise for the Australian in Beverly Hills:
"Mel and I have the same lawyer, same publicist, and same shrink. I couldn't get hired and he cast me," Downey said. "He said if I accepted responsibility - he called it hugging the cactus - long enough, my life would take meaning. And if he helped me, I would help the next guy. But it was not reasonable to expect the next guy would be him."
