Robbie Williams - Robbie Williams Thrilled With Record-smashing Soccer Aid

British singer Robbie Williams has thanked fans after learning this year's (12) Soccer Aid showdown pulled in a record-breaking $7.8 million (£4.9 million) for charity.
The pop star, who co-founded the biennial celebrity fundraiser, served as captain of Team England as they triumphed over the Rest of the World squad 3-1 in Manchester, England last May (12).
Williams was amazed after the final figures, released on Thursday (06Sep12), showed Soccer Aid 2012 generated more cash for Unicef than ever before, following additional donations from the U.K. government.
He says, "I'm still basking in the glory of England's win and so pleased that this has been the best Soccer Aid yet with almost £5 million raised for Unicef - for children. Thank you so, so much to everyone who donated on the night or bought a ticket to the match - we couldn't have done it without you."
Welsh actor Michael Sheen, who headed up the rival side, adds, "Despite not retaining our trophy from 2010, it was the most incredible year yet. Thanks to the pound for pound matching from the U.K. government, we were able to raise more money than ever before which will help Unicef reach so many more children with life-saving care like vaccines and emergency food."
Actors Will Ferrell, Mike Myers, Gerard Butler, Edward Norton, and Woody Harrelson, chef Gordon Ramsay, and Kasabian rocker Serge Pizzorno were among the stars who hit the field for the match.
