Robbie Williams Makes Solo Comeback In Leeds: But Where Are The New Songs?

Over 500,000 Robbie Williams fans applied for tickets to witness his low-key comeback gigs. Last night, Robbie performed at Leeds’ O2 Academy, to 2,300 lucky punters. By Robbie’s standards, that’s a pretty intimate gig. Many performers would give their right arm to play in front of that many people but when you are Robbie Williams, pop star supremo and former member of Take That, you are more used to entertaining the masses at the likes of Wembley Arena.

Williams knows that he has a lot to prove with his ninth studio album, Take The Crown, but what should his fans make of the fact that he only played two songs from the album, last night? According to BBC News, Robbie’s one and a half hour set included just ‘Candy’ and ‘Losers,’ from his new material. You’d think he’d be keen to showcase the new songs to his dedicated fans but instead, he opted to treat them to some of their old favourites, such as Angels, Let Me Entertain You and Rock DJ. The report from BBC describes his onstage antics as being like “the Robbie of old – hyperactive, compelling, mischievous and needy,” as he did press-ups onstage and showed off his robotic dance skills.

He seemed apprehensive about the new material that he did share with fans. Of the lead single, ‘Candy,’ he said “I hope, I hope it's played so much on the radio that you say, turn this off." Some of that apprehension, though, may have come from the fact that his wife Ayda is about to give birth to their first child any day now, which might scupper his plans for this week’s gigs in Glasgow and Dublin.
