Rio's Live Earth Back On

by | 06 July 2007

Rio de Janeiro's Live Earth concert is now back on after security concerns raised by local authorities have been eased by the concert organisers.

Earlier this week the gig was cancelled after local police wanted to review security capabilities.

But after meeting with the authorities and addressing the concerns raised, the Copacabana Beach event will now go ahead as planned.

A statement from Mondo Entertainment, which is promoting the Rio concert, said that the Brazilian military police felt they could now "guarantee the security of the show".

Reacting to the news, Live Earth communications director Kristina Schake said: "We are thrilled that Brazil will be a part of this monumental global event and that Latin America will help drive Live Earth's message about working together to combat the climate crisis.

"Rio is the only concert that is free and open to the public, and one of Live Earth's enduring images will be of the hundreds of thousands of people on Copacabana Beach being a part of Live Earth's global movement."

Live Earth will take place in Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, London, Hamburg, Rio de Janeiro and New York tomorrow.

There had been a concert planned in Istanbul, but this was shelved after a low level of interest.

London's Live Earth, taking place at Wembley Stadium, will include performances from Madonna, Kasabian, Genesis, Paolo Nutini, Metallica and Duran Duran.

Like Madonna, Do All Celebrities Just Get Out Of Jury Service? 4276244 News

On Monday Madonna reported to a Manhattan courthouse to fulfil her civic responsibilities, yes the queen of pop was summoned for jury duty. But it seems when Madonna does jury duty it’s not really the same as if you or I had to do it. The Material Girl was allowed to arrive an hour later than the other jurors (she was still half an hour late), she didn't have to queue and in the end she was dismissed after just two hours so as not to create a distraction. But Madonna’s brief in court appearance means she had now filled her jury responsibilities until 2020, when we’ll see if she can beat her two hour record. So, do celebrities just not have to do jury service?

MadonnaMadonna didn't last long at jury service

Woody Allen was called for jury duty in 1998, five years after his very public court battle with ex Mia Farrow. During the selection process he allegedly told the judge he felt “The courts do not serve justice.’’ Luckily for Allen a brief appearance in the box and one headline making statement was all his jury duty amounted to, as the case ended up not going to trail, with Allen and his fellow jurors being simply sent home.

Brad Pitt got a similarly easy ride when he was ordered for jury duty in 2007. After postponing his appearance several times, Pitt spend a day sitting in a Los Angeles courtroom wearing a jurors badge and reportedly eating a Subway. But the case was one of those over before it began deals as the defendant pleaded no contest and the jurors were eventually dismissed.

When Charlie Sheen reported for jury duty last September he didn't even make it as far as the courtroom, after he wasn't selected for the panel. Outside the court Sheen had told reporters he was looking to preside over a “multiple homicide case, something really interesting. But everybody's innocent until proven guilty, right? At least they used to be, right?” Still, by turning up Sheen fulfilled his obligations and even got a certificate to prove it.

However Tom Hanks proved that sometimes a celebrity serving on a jury can cause more harm than good. In 2012 the actor was called to serve on the jury of a domestic violence case in Los Angeles. For a week the trail went on with Forest Gump himself sitting in the jurors box seemingly appearing like any other anonymous member of the public. But then Hank’s jury service came to an abrupt end when a prosecutor was accused of misconduct after approaching Hanks. According to reports a ‘star stuck’ female prosecutor approached Tom during a lunch break thanked him, and said “how impressed everyone is that such a celebrity would still be here serving jury duty”. It seems this is a major no no and it caused the defence team to ask for a retrial. Eventually, the domestic violence charge was downgraded to disturbing the peace and the defendant was given a $150 fine. All thanks to one woman fangirling a little too much over Tom Hanks.

But spare a thought for footballer Carl Fletcher. The Welsh international and then captain of League One side Plymouth Argyle, presumably didn't want any Hanks-like incidents occurring when he reported for jury service. Fletcher tried to explain to the judge that he should be exempted from service, but ended up being told in no uncertain terms that he just wasn't famous enough. "Captaining Plymouth Argyle is not sufficient reason for not doing jury service”, the judge reportedly told him. Adding, "Lots of well-known people, some more famous than you, have been required to sit on juries.”

So really, yes famous people do have to complete jury service, they just usually they end up going home a lot earlier than we would.

Madonna "Inspired" To Donate To Three Detroit-Based Charities 4268308 News

Madonna was in a very giving mood when she left her home city of Detroit recently.

The 55 year-old singer is donating a large amount of money to the construction of a new youth boxing gym that offers after-school boxing and education to deprived children living in the city.

She is also supplying art and music supplies, as well as a whole range of new equipment to The Detroit Achievement Academy, which focuses on schools located in Michigan's poorest ZIP code.

Finally, as part of her organization, the Empowerment Plan, Madonna plans to help homeless women get jobs sewing coats and sleeping bags for other homeless people in Detroit.

These generous acts were announced in a statement by the 'Like A Virgin' singer, released by her publicist on Monday (June 30th).

"I was deeply inspired by the efforts of so many people who I met who have dedicated themselves to helping the kids and adults in Detroit elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty," Madonna said, via Rolling Stone

Nicolas Cage Wears Nicolas Cage Meme T-Shirt To Guns N' Roses Concert 4237874 News

In what may be our favourite Instagram post of all time, rock band Guns N’ Roses have shared an image of Nicolas Cage…wearing Nicolas Cage. The band posted the image, which features the iconic actor wearing a cowboy hat, blue blazer, copious beads around his neck, a pair of sunglasses and…finest of all, a t-shirt featuring an image from one of his famous fan-made memes.

<iframe src="//instagram.com/p/o-S6satDp9/embed/" width="636" height="710" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>

Nicolas Cage may be one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, but over the past few years it’s the collection of memes and fan videos dedicated to him which he’s become best-known for. Cage’s habit of totally surrendering himself, body and soul, to a role has led to a few onscreen outbursts which fans go freaking nuts for.

Some of the most famous Nicolas Cage memes include Nic Cage Has Great Hair, Cage loves Karamari and Nic Cage Doesn’t Change Facial Expression. His dramatic outburst in the 2007 movie “The Wicker Man” led to the “Not The Bees!” YouTube video, which has been watched nearly 2 million times and has been the subject of various remixes.

Nicolas Cage Memes Nicolas Cage is a favourite subject for meme creators

So, fans were thrilled to see the actor wearing one of his own memes on a t-shirt, showing that he’s in on the whole joke just as much as everyone else is. Of course he is, he’s goddamn Nicolas Cage, king of the internet!

MORE: Is this the best Nicolas Cage prank ever?

Guns N’ Roses posted the pic of Cage, which was taken when he attended one of their concerts in Las Vegas over the weekend. The image is reminiscent of that time that Ryan Gosling wore a t-shirt of Macaulay Culkin, only for Culkin to then take a photo of Gosling wearing the t-shirt and print it on a top of his own. Very postmodern.

Celebs do have a habit of wearing t-shirts with other famous people printed on them (although, unlike Nic, it’s usually not a picture of themselves…). Miley Cyrus has been seen sporting a t-shirt with an image of rapper Tupac on it (because she’s so totally gangsta these days), while Katy Perry has been spotted wearing Madonna. Madonna in turn has been papped wearing a t-shirt with an image of American president Barack Obama while recently single Rita Ora was once snapped wearing a t-shirt featuring a sketch of her friend Cara Delevingne with the caption ‘Queen Delevingne’ scrawled across it.

Way to show your support for each other, famous people! Although we still hope to see Nicolas Cage wearing many more Nicolas Cage t-shirts in the future.

Katy Perry Recommended Crystal Healing By Madonna 4224437 News

Katy Perry is using crystals to heal her broken heart after pop icon Madonna recommended the bizarre therapy.

Madonna introduced the Firework hitmaker to crystal healing, an alternative medicine technique that can supposedly mend a variety of health woes by changing a person's energy.

Perry, who split from John Mayer earlier this year (14), now employs the practice to keep her in top shape while on tour and to help her find love.

She says, "I'm a huge fan (of Madonna). I've got to know her recently and she's incredible... She had given me some advice on how to maintain my health throughout the tour. She had given me a number for a crystal healer. Everything stems from people's energy so it makes sense. I sleep with a rose quartz in my hand at night. It's supposed to help you find love and also heal your heart."

A 24-year-old man from Arizona, Devon Meek, believed Cyrus was using her music in order to communicate with him directly. Meek continually attempted to meet Cyrus who was granted a temporary restraining order against him on Friday (23rd May).

Meek was arrested in Arizona on 16th May after he was discovered outside a property he believed Cyrus owned, as the AP reports. However, the restraining order concerns where Meek is released as the detective who arrested him claimed the 24-year-old would continue to see Cyrus. Another hearing is scheduled for June 16th which may see the restraining order made permanent, for at least three years. The detective in question said, in a sworn statement, Meek "will not stop seeking Ms. Cyrus" until she "accepts him or he dies."

Celebrity Mother's Day: Kim K Gets Wall of Flowers, Bieber Gets Shower of Boos 4191404 News

Sunday was the day to honor the most special woman in your life, as Mother’s Day was celebrated throughout the US. Celebrities took to social media to spread the love for their mothers with many sharing special snaps on Instagram to let their mom’s know just how much they love them. Here’s how a few of our favourite celebrities, including Kim K, chose to celebrate Mother’s Day, plus added Justin Bieber, who maybe should stay at home next year.

<iframe src="//instagram.com/p/n3Jr3-uS7M/embed/" width="636" height="710" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>

Celebrating her first Mother’s Day as a mother herself, Kim Kardashian was lavished with a wall of flowers by fiancee Kanye West. Yes that’s A WALL of flowers, cause a bouquet just wouldn't cut it. Kim also shared a touching black and white portrait of herself and daughter North on Instagram writing, ‘’This little girl has changed my world in more ways than I ever could have imagined! Being a mom is the most rewarding feeling in the world! Happy Mothers Day to all of the moms out there!’’

Showing her softer side, Madonna spent the day sharing snaps of herself and each of her four children on Instagram. She started with a picture of herself and son David Banda, whom she adopted in 2006. She also shared pictures of son Rocco and daughters Mercy and Lourdes as well as a lighthearted meme featuring her own late mother which had the caption “bitch please, I made Madonna”. The Queen of Pop finished her day with a picture of herself enjoying a bubble bath entitled, “The perfect end to a perfect day. #livingforlove.”

Model Miranda Kerr and her mother Therese aren’t known for having the best of relationships, but it seems the two picked the perfect day to put their rift behind them. Four months ago Therese had appeared on Australian tv begging her daughter to come home and saying she hadn't seen grandson Flynn in over a year. But all seems to be well with the extended Kerr family now, as Miranda posted a picture of herself and Flynn celebrating with the whole Kerr family captioned, “Such a special day with my family. Happy Mother's Day to all xxx.”

But spare a thought for Justin Bieber who tried his best to have a happy Mother’s Day, but alas it just wasn't meant to be. Justin treated his mother Patti to a Los Angeles Clippers basketball game on Sunday, but the rest of the crowd weren't too happy to see him. When Bieber’s face was shown on the Jumbotron, E! reports that the entire crowd booed the singer, that’s everybody, except his mom, probably. Still the general feeling towards her son didn't seem to spoil Patti’s day as she later Instagramed a pic of the two together with the caption, “Enjoying Clippers game w my favourite man for Mother's Day. Love you @justinbieber xoxo.”

Piers Morgan Criticises US Gun Laws On Last CNN Show 4130445 News

Piers Morgan ended his three year run on his CNN talk show Piers Morgan Live on Friday (28th March) with a plea to the US government to change "the absurd gun laws".Morgan's show was cancelled following low ratings and possibly his involvement in the phone hacking scandal, nevertheless he left the show on a somewhat controversial note.

Morgan, ever controversial, used his final show as an opportunity to comment on the social and political implications of gun laws in the US. He referenced recent tragedies in which guns were used to kill large numbers of people which prompted criticism of gun laws in the US and worldwide.

Morgan has spent a number of years in the states over the past decade and described gun violence, such as that displayed in the Connecticut Sandy Hook massacre and the Colorado Aurora Cinema, as "a disease that infects every aspect of American life". Referencing these attacks Morgan said, as The Independent reports: "I assumed that after 70 people were shot in a movie theatre and then just a few months later 20 first-graders were murdered with an assault rifle in an elementary school, that the absurd gun laws in this country would change, but nothing has happened".

See more pictures of Piers Morgan on Contactmusic.

48-year-old Morgan continued by criticising the government for seeming to quail when faced with pressure from the NRA. He said: "The gun lobby in America, led by the NRA, has bullied this nation's politicians into cowardly silence," once more referencing the Sandy Hook massacre.

Morgan finished his plea to the "decent, hardworking thoroughly dependable people" of the US by reminding them of their responsibility in challenging the gun lobby. He emphasised how "more guns" simply means, contrary to what the gun lobby would have the public believe, "more gun violence, more death and more profits for the gun manufacturers." Morgan's last comment urged Americans to make a stand, proclaiming "it's down to you. It is your country. These are your gun laws. And the senseless slaughter will only end when enough Americans stand together and cry, 'Enough!' I look forward to that day."

Morgan is not the only famous face to have directly - or indirectly - challenged the NRA. Indeed, so much support was rallied against the gun lobby that they felt obliged in 2013 to label a number of famous faces "anti-gun," as The Huffington Post reports. Amongst a whole host of celebrities listed on the NRA website (the list has since been deleted) Meryl Streep, Madonna, Alec Baldwin, Shania Twain and Ellen DeGeneres have all allegedly "officially endorsed anti-gun positions."

Is Madonna The Right Choice To Direct 'Adé: A Love Story'? 4127463 News

Her Madgesty has decided that it’s time to get back into the director’s seat, despite film critics in the past urging her not to quit her day job. Madonna’s directorial projects haven’t been quite as well received as we’re sure she had hoped, but the Queen of Pop seems to have decided that the third time is the charm.  We've got faith in the Papa Don't Preach singer, we're always impressed with someone who doesn't quit despite past failures.  It shows a real strength of character!  Film-making is also the only area of her life that Madonna hasn't thrived in, perhaps she's simply unwilling to admit defeat.

madonna ade a love story Madonna is set to direct her third film 'Ade: A Love Story'

Madonna’s first two films Fifth and Wisdom and W.E. weren’t exactly put forward for Oscars consideration, although her new film Adé: A Love Story does sound quite intriguing. The film is to be an adaption of Rebecca Walker’s 2013 debut novel of the same name and will be produced by Bruce Cohen, who has worked on several Academy Award winning films, including Silver Linings Playbook, American Beauty and Milk. It sounds like a wise idea for Madonna to get such an experienced and successful producer on board the project, especially one with such a respectable body of work under his belt.

The plot itself focuses on the romance between a young American woman and a Muslim man she meets while traveling. The pair fall in love but struggle with the political and cultural strains on their relationship. There's also a feminist traveling companion thrown into the mix, just so we get a full house of political ideology.  Eloping to Kenya after they have married, the couple find themselves caught up in a civil war. The war has the potential to damage their relationship beyond repair, and the movie looks set to focus on how they handle the pressure of outside forces.

The film is in its very early stages, and Madonna and Bruce Cohen Productions are still looking for a suitable screenwriter with the ability to adapt Walker’s book into a film. We love the sound of the story, it sounds fresh and extremely relevant, although it also sounds very ambitious. A film with such weighty topics deserves a director that will be able to do the themes justice. Do you think that this director is Madonna? Her eight year marriage to Guy Ritche didn’t seem to have benefitted her previous projects, but perhaps she just needed the right film.

Chris Evans And Other Actors Who Retired To Become Directors 4126153 News

Chris Evans has told Variety that when the time comes that he is no longer under Marvel contract he plans to turn his hand to directing. The Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor explained, “I’ve known for a while I wanted to direct. But [time] never really opens up...There’s another movie to do, there’s another acting job...If I’m acting at all, it’s going to be under Marvel contract, or I’m going to be directing.”

Evans isn’t the first actor to feel the call of the director’s seat, some were more natural behind the camera, some should never have quit their day jobs.

Ron Howard is the ultimate actor-turned-director success story. Howard’s Happy Days starring as Richie Cunningham are almost a side note to his career these days, his most notable films including Apollo 13, The Da Vinci Code and A Beautiful Mind, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director.

With the younger generation, Clint Eastwood is probably only known for his directing work rather than the spaghetti Western roles for which he first made his name. Eastwood starred in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and A Fistful of Dollars, although he’s mostly recognised these days for directing Gran Torino, Letters from Iwo Jima (which scored his a nomination for Best Director Oscar), Mystic River (another Best Director Oscar nomination), Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven, for both of which he won the Academy Award for Best Director.

Ben Affleck won the Oscar for his work penning the script for Good Will Hunting in 1998, and while he continued to act it seemed that he developed a taste for the backstage as well. Affleck has gone onto direct The Town, Gone Baby Gone and Argo, for which he won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the Year as well as the Golden Globe for Best Director. He’s billed to star as Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman, so it doesn’t look like he’ll be hanging up his hanging up his acting boots anytime soon, but he is definitely a director to watch.

Not all stars who turn to directing are quite as successful as Ron, Clint and Ben. These guys also gave it a shot, but weren’t received quite as well.

Madonna may churn out some cracking pop songs but a director...she is not. Her directorial debut W.E. received almost unanimously negative reviews, the late Roger Ebert describing it as “relentlessly monotonous”. Perhaps Madge should leave the directing gig to her ex, Guy Richie.

Next page: How about Eddie Murphy's ill-fated flirtation with directing?

Eddie Murphy may have been on the movie making scene for a long time, but he doesn’t seem to have picked up any flair for directing. His stint directing Harlem Nights in 1989 didn’t wow the critics, even the positive reviews are tinged with negativity, “Not as bad as you might think, but not all that good either”, Ken Hanke remarked, while Ebert labeled it “An uninspired cross between Cotton Club and the characters of Damon Runyon, told in cliches so broad you keep waiting for it to poke fun at itself, but it never does.” Ouch.

Let’s hope the critics are kinder to Chris Evans when he finally takes the directing plunge.
