Ricky Gervais: Spy Kids Dog Was Going To Be Put Down

Ricky Gervais has revealed the dog in his new movie 'Spy Kids: All the Time in the World' was going to be put down before he landed the role.

The comic actor voices the cunning canine character Argonaut in the new children's movie and Ricky admits the pooch was a rescue dog who was facing death before he was turned into a Hollywood star.

During an appearance on British daytime TV show 'This Morning', he said: "I'm not the star of this film, it's the dog, he's the cutest dog in the world ... He was a rescue dog, they were going to put him down but the crew saved him and put him in the film and made him a star."

Ricky loved recording his parts for the movie - which also stars Jessica Alba and Joel McHale - because the director Robert Rodriguez allowed him to adlib most of his lines.

He explained: "I was allowed to do a lot of adlibbing . It was just me with a set of headphones on, watching the dog and saying stupid things, which is what I do for a job. But it's great."

Ricky's next project is TV comedy series 'Life's Too Short' starring Warwick Davis and a host of very famous guest stars including Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sting and Steve Carrell.

The 50-year-old actor contacted the guest stars personally to ask them to be on the show.

Ricky said: "I email them and say, 'How would you like to work for very little money, near Slough, with a director who ruins every take through laughing, with dwarfs?' And they all say yes!"
