Six months after the implementation of the so-called six-strikes alert system that warns BitTorrent users about downloading copyrighted material, a record number of visitors to The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites is being reported. Indeed, TorrentFreak.com, which tracks BitTorrent usage reported on Tuesday that traffic to The Pirate Bay has more than doubled over the past two years. The alert system is intended initially to inform users that their Internet connection is being used to access copyrighted material illegally and to advise them where they can find the same or similar content legally. After six such warnings they could then face being disconnected from the Internet. TorrentFreak said that the operators of the system have not disclosed how many people have been warned or how many have been disconnected.
