Report Leno To Return To 11 30

Only days after NBC executives were putting out the word that they had no plans to make changes to their 10 00 p.m. hour until they put the rest of their programming house in order, a spate of reports surfaced Thursday that the network had decided to return Leno to his old 11 35 time slot but shorten his show to 30 minutes nightly following its coverage of the Winter Olympics at the end of February. The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien would follow at 12 05 a.m. and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon at 1 05 a.m. According to the reports, while Leno has readily agreed to the change, O'Brien has not and might well decided to jump ship and head for ABC or Fox. The question, according to those in the know, is whether either of those networks really want O'Brien, who has not picked up new viewers as Leno's successor on The Tonight Show . Quite the contrary Daily Variety said today (Friday) that the network had been forced to attend to the 10 00 time period by reports that a revolt was brewing among its affiliates, whose 11 00 p.m. newscasts were being adversely affected by Leno's mediocre lead-in. All of which prompted Leno to remark during his monologue Thursday night "The Justice Department announced they will conduct an anti-trust review of Comcast's proposed deal to merge with NBC. An anti-trust review. Which is the relationship I have with NBC -- Anti-trust. ... What does NBC stand for? Never believe your contract." On his show, O'Brien made no mention of the rumors.
